The Government of South Australia has supported the establishment of the Tapangka Arts and Media Hub within the broader Tapangka cultural precinct on Franklin Street in Adelaide’s CBD.

The proposed Arts and Media Hub will co‑locate the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) with key South Australian arts organisations in a purpose‑built environment designed to support cultural production, storytelling and collaboration. The development is planned for the former Adelaide Bus Station site and is part of a larger city‑shaping project that brings together arts, media, housing and public space.

Subject to public works approvals, the South Australian Government and the ABC will partner to progress plans for the new hub. Country Arts SA, State Theatre Company South Australia and State Opera South Australia are proposed to relocate to a stand‑alone building that will also house the new ABC offices.

The co‑location model is intended to support collaboration across disciplines through shared facilities and creative exchange. Proposed facilities include a gallery, rehearsal rooms, studios and production spaces, which are designed to support artists and organisations to develop work, reach audiences and share South Australian stories locally, nationally and internationally.

Tapangka recognises and celebrates the site’s Kaurna heritage, with culture and Country embedded in the planning, design and future life of the precinct. The development reflects a broader commitment to reconciliation, inclusion and ensuring cultural heritage remains central to the way South Australia grows and evolves.

The Arts and Media Hub is a cornerstone of the wider Tapangka precinct, which is also planned to include a mixed‑use community with market and affordable housing, retail and public spaces. Renewal SA continues to work through the future composition of the Tapangka site to guide the next phase of development, including areas adjacent to the ABC facility.

The Tapangka Arts and Media Hub strengthens South Australia’s cultural infrastructure by creating a shared location for major arts and media organisations in the heart of the city. It supports collaboration, increases the visibility of creative work and helps ensure South Australian stories continue to be created, shared and preserved.

By bringing arts organisations and a national broadcaster together, the hub creates new opportunities for artists, regional voices and communities to connect with audiences and participate in cultural life.

The Tapangka Development will see State Opera return to the CBD, where it was founded in 1976, and we look forward to moving into this dedicated Arts Hub with our colleagues at State Theatre and Country Arts.  The designed for purpose offices, opera studio and costume workroom will allow us to continue to create world class opera in South Australia for performances locally and tours interstate and internationally.
